I just recently read the Economist's take as well. Although I'm more on the information science side of patent information, I am affiliated with Patent Resources Group (PRG), which just announced a panel discussion in June on this very topic. The information is available at http://patentresources.wordpress.com/2010/02/10/021010-patent-resources-group-announces-line-up-for-unique-panel-discussion-on-u-s-patent-law/ if you're interested.

The focus of the panel is going to include:

* U.S. patent reform,
* Approaches to improve pendency and efficiency at the USPTO, and
* Latest developments at, and tensions between, the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit

Just thought I'd pass the info along!
