Here are some immigration links:
- Jose Antonio Vargas’s new website, Define American, is really fantastic. It’s a pitch-perfect example of the kind of humanizing effort I wrote about on Wednesday. Not only does it portray Vargas himself as a sympathetic victim of our crazy immigration system, it also portrays the many Americans who helped him break the law as heros, which is what they are:
- “We are undocumented, unafraid, and unapologetic in our defense for our rights.” (Thanks to reader Sara Mayeux for the link)
- Another reader points to this Australian show about the difficulties of being an undocumented immigrant.
- I predict Ezra Klein will live to regret writing posts like this.
I think Klein’s inability to take a strong position there is kind of lame, but I am not sure how being over-careful to hedge is going to be regrettable in the long run. Plenty of pundits have pursued that strategy for decades and nothing awful has come of it.
I think lots of liberals who were “over-careful” during the Civil Rights movement came to regret it.
